Founded on June 29, 1776, by Spanish colonists, the California Gold Rush of 1849 saw the city bloom to become the largest on the West Coast at the time. Today, it’s a cultural and economic hub, enticing residents and businesses from all walks of life to settle within its bounds. It headquarters some of the biggest companies in the world including Twitter, Airbnb, Salesforce, Uber, and Dropbox.
San Francisco is a popular tourist attraction year-round. It’s known for its cool summers, eclectic mix of architecture, and steep rolling hills. With a range of attractions ready and waiting for the click of a camera, it’s popular with sightseers and adventurers alike.
The Bay Bridge links the I-80 to the city from the east while the Golden Gate Bridge hitches onto Highway 1 from the north. If driving from the south, you’ll take either the U.S. 101 or the I-280 – both snake up the peninsula and into San Francisco proper. Ensure you have good directions and a detailed map when driving into San Francisco. The freeway interchanges, particularly around the Bay Bridge, are notoriously confusing and the traffic congestion can be hectic.
To rent an RV in San Francisco, you can also fly in. San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is located in San Mateo County about 13 miles south of Downtown San Francisco. It services flights throughout North America and is a major gateway to Asia and Europe.
Amtrak is a great way to get to San Francisco, as well:
● Depart from Seattle or Portland on the Coast Starlight if coming from the north.
● Depart from Los Angeles on the Coast Starlight if traveling from the south.
● Depart from Chicago or Denver if traveling from the East.
● Depart from Fresno or Bakersfield on the Amtrak San Joaquin.
Also operated by Amtrak, the Capitol Corridor serves 18 stops between Sacramento and Silicon Valley.
Street parking rates range from $1 per hour up to $7 an hour, depending on the neighborhood. These rates can also fluctuate up and down every couple of hours. Most of the city’s meters are enforced from 9 am to 6 pm Monday to Saturday. Sunday is enforced in certain locations, including The Embarcadero, Nine off-street parking lots,Fisherman’s Wharf, Special Event Area around Chase Center and Oracle Park
